River Annan
Report
19th July 2010
At last we have had rain. The river has been running
around the three feet mark for several days now and is
undergoing a really good flush. It is needed as the algae
had built up and the bottom has become very slippery. The
colour is very dark and indicative of which part of the
catchment has taken the rain. Peat stain does no harm at
all as long as they can see the fly.
The good news is that the rain has encouraged the fish to
run. Not in large numbers but it has certainly stirred
them up and sea trout are being caught from the bottom of
the system to the top. We have even had a couple of grilse
caught on the bottom beats.
The weather is forecast to continue wet throughout this
coming week which will do no harm at all. The winds will
ease later in the week. Water temperature this morning was
63.7f or 16.4c.
If as forecast we will have considerable rain tonight then
the river will clear fairly quickly and will be fishable
mid week. There are rods available on most beats and a fly
with red or orange will suffice. Now would be a good time
to throw a sicky!!!!!!!!!! |

Keith,
To let you know we arrived home safe and sound, if not
tired out and thoroughly contented, after the spey
casting tuition we booked with yourself on the River
Annan.
It was the best birthday present Steven has had. We
arrived home and he was out with the rod putting into
practice what you had shown us on the day.
As an elderly person!!!!!!???? I was worried that I may
not be able to cope with this new way of fishing, and
although it took me a little longer to master the basics
I can assure you that your patience, practical
demonstration, and hands on approach coupled with your
empathetic teaching skills were first class.
Although we primarily booked for the casting lessons,
your all round knowledge of the Annan river system, and
how to fish the different stretches of water, coupled
with tackle and initial setup advice made the day both
interesting and enjoyable.
We will be back up in a couple of weeks time to try and
bag that first salmon and I shall ring you to book
accommodation, and see if you will be available to
accompany my son and myself.
Once again Keith thanks for a great experience.
Mike and Steven Cook.
